Questioning The Resolve Of The United States

It seems more and more as though people and nations are questioning the resolve of the United States. This probably can be traced back to the Viet Nam war, when Americans tired of a war that their government seemed to lack any resolve for finishing. The half halfhearted war effort encouraged America’s enemies, sapped the will of the military, and gave rise to the growing impatience Americans had to either finish the war, or get out of it. When the government caved in to the wishes of its citizens and withdrew from the war, a horrible slaughter of America’s friends and allies took place in South Viet Nam.

Since the Viet Nam disaster, America’s resolve has often been rightfully questioned by its friends, and noted as a weak spot by enemies. This was seen in countless examples during the years following our exodus from Viet Nam, and in particular, in the instance of the hostage situation in Iran. During the decades that followed, there can be no doubt that America’s unwillingness to show any fortitude in response to numerous acts of terrorism, emboldened the plotters of the September 11th attacks. How surprised our enemies must have been when they saw an America that did not back down from the War on Terrorism, and refused to give up on the campaign in Iraq, despite the public outcry from the domestic front.

America’s resolve is again being called into question, with the announced plans of leaving Iraq, despite the possible consequences. How tragic it would be if America’s enemies took root in that fragile area of the middle east. One has to ponder a future President, once again, facing a situation where the United States has to go back into Iraq to do a job all over again, that had already been done once, before.
